Travel to Donoussa

Donoussa has no airport and of course there is no package tourism, and it will certainly never be. The only option is to travel independently, which is as easy as pie.

BY INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS

I think it's best to go by air to Santorini or Mykonos, and continue by ferry to Naxos where you change ferry and travel on to Donoussa. You can also fly to Athens and travel on by ferry from Athens' port at Piraeus.

BY DOMESTIC FLIGHTS

The nearest domestic airport lies on Naxos.

BY FERRY

The ferry service to and from Donoussa follows almost the same pattern as for Amorgos and the neighbouring islands of the Small Cyclades. Donoussa is best reached from Naxos, with large ferries or with the mythical Express Skopelitis.

Express Skopelitis is a small local ferry with its home port in Katapola on Amorgos. It is small, it is slow, it seldom keeps to time and it is not the archipelago's funniest ferry to travel with. When it is a strong wind, nothing unusual in the Cyclades, you should avoid Express Skopelitis.

However, it is a joy to travel with Express Skopelitis in good weather, you chugs along between the islands of the Small Cyclades, you sit close to the waterline and it feels like you are out with your own boat in the archipelago.

Express Scopelitis services all islands in the Small Cyclades, including Donoussa.

Express Skopelitis leaves the port in Donoussa.

Express Skopelitis runs the route Naxos, Iraklia, Schinoussa, Koufonissi and Amorgos all year round. Some departures also goes to Donoussa. The journey between Naxos and Donoussa takes about four hours, longer if the wind blows. In high season, Express Skopelitis runs three to four times a week to Donoussa, during low season there are fewer departures.

Do you think that Express Skopelitis feels insecure, or take too long, you can travel with Blue Star Ferries from both Naxos and Piraeus. It takes about an hour to Donoussa from Naxos with Blue Star Ferries.

Blue Star Ferries services all the islands of the Small Cyclades, including Donoussa.

The ferries from Naxos leave late at night, usually you will arrive in the middle of the night. The ferries from Naxos starts out from Piraeus, so if you start your voyage in Athens, you will arrive at the same time.
