Getting around on Rhodes

As I mentioned earlier, Rhodes is a very large island with many inhabitants and of course this is reflected in the traffic, which is quite intense. This is especially true in and around Rhodes town and on the highway down to Lindos. Some drive like car thieves and it is important to be vigilant at all times and follow the traffic rules, even if no one else seems to be doing so. Finding a parking space in Rhodes town can be very difficult, but it usually works out after a bit of driving around.

BY CAR, SCOOTER AND MOTO BIKE

Cars, moto bikes and bicycles can be rented almost everywhere. Although it's nice to discover islands by scooter, it doesn't suit Rhodes so well, as the island is too big and a car is definitely preferable. Feel free to compare the prices when you rent a car, the competition is fierce. An easy way to rent a car is to book the car from home and pick it up at the airport after you've landed in Rhodes.

BY BUS

There are city buses and regional buses. The latter serve the entire island and depart from Mandraki harbour. The bus station is located in one corner of New Market. You can't miss it. There are two bus stations for the regional buses, they are both located in one corner of the New Market in Mandraki harbour. Tickets are bought on board or at the ticket kiosks at the bus stations. During high season - which is very long in Rhodes - it happens that the buses are so crowded that they don't stop at all stations.

You can find the bus timetable here.

BY TAXI

There are a lot of taxis. Be sure to ask how much the trip will cost before you get in the car. Most taxis have fixed prices.

BY EXCURSION BOATS AND BEACH BOATS

There are loads of different boat trips to do. I don't think there is any other island in Greece where the range is so great. Bech and excursion boats to, among others, the beaches of Kallithea, Anthony Quinn, Tsambika and Lindos leave every morning from Mandraki harbour, and from all major tourist resorts.

Can you rent your own boat in Rhodes? The answer is yes.

You can also rent your own boat, like here in the cozy village of Stegna.

LONGER BOAT EXCURSIONS

Daily tours to the neighbouring island of Symi depart from Mandraki harbour. The boats leave early in the morning and are back in Rhodes around 18.00. I would like to recommend a day trip to Symi. The only downside is that you are not alone in going there. You can also do day trips to Kastellorio and Tilos.

The most popular boat trips from Rhodes go to Symi, Kastellorizo, Chalki and Tilos.

One of the most popular day trips goes to Symi.

As many as 1,500 people go there in one and the same day. Symi town (Gialos) becomes like a fairground when all the day-trippers pour in and the prices skyrocket. If you go there, I can recommend going up the long beautiful stairs to the nice village of Chorio.

HIKING ON RHODES

Rhodes is a good island to hike on because the landscape is very beautiful. So if you like to hike you will like Rhodes.
