Travel to Rhodes in Greece

Rhodes is one of the most accessible islands in Greece: all major tour operators fly here, domestic flights are well developed and the ferry connections are among the best imaginable. So whether you travel organized or on your own, Rhodes is never far away.

BY TOUR OPERATORS

There are a number of different tourist resorts to choose from, including Afandou, Faliraki, Ixia, Kallithea, Kolymbia, Lindos, Pefkos, Rhodes Town and Trianda. If you have difficulty choosing, the city of Rhodes is a good base.

The airport (RHO) is called Diagoras and is located 14 kilometres southwest of Rhodes town, right next to the village of Paradisi. The airport was previously undersized and chaotic, to say the least. But since the German company Fraport took over the airport a few years ago, the airport is good and everything runs very smoothly. Once you have passed the security check, you will be greeted by several restaurants, fast food places, kiosks, cafes and bars. There are also two duty-free shops.

BY INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS

Rhodes Airport is one of Greece's busiest and all major airlines fly to Rhodes International Airport Diagoras. The journey from the airport to Mandraki port in Rhodes town takes about 30 minutes by taxi and costs around €30, the airport bus takes slightly longer and costs much less.

Since 2023, there is a bus that goes from Rhodes town via the airport to Kamiros Skala which fits with the ferry that goes from there on Wednesdays and Sundays to Tilos. In the past, you had to spend the night in Rhodes or take a taxi for €60-70.

BY DOMESTIC FLIGHTS

Rhodes has daily flights to Athens, Karpathos, Kassos, Kastelorizo, Crete and Thessaloniki. In addition, there are several departures a week to, among others, Astypalea, Kos and Leros.

BY FERRY

The ferry connections to and from Rhodes are very good. Not least, the connections with other islands in the Dodecanese are good, if not excellent. There are also ferrys to and from some islands in the Cyclades, and of course to and from Crete and Piraeus (Athens).

There are three ports in Rhodes: Akandia and Kolona in Rhodes Town, as well as Kamiros Skala (boats to Tilos) which is about 45 km southwest of Rhodes town. The port of Kolona is located between Mandraki port and Akandia port. Kolona is opposite the Marina Gate, which is one of the entrances to the old town of Rhodes. Kolona is the home port of Dodekanisos Seaways and from there there are boats to Kos, Kastellorizo, Kalymnos, Leros, Nisyros, Chalki and Tilos, among others. There is a ticket office in the port.

All major ferries, such as Blue Star Ferries, depart from the giant port of Akandia. It is a long way to go with packing to Akandia from Rhodes town. Take a taxi and you won't have to wear yourself out, it doesn't cost many euros. There is a ticket office in the port. There is a decent beach near Akandia harbour where you can swim while waiting for the ferry.

Kamiros Skala is located approximately 45 km southwest of Rhodes town. From the harbour in Kamiros Skala there are boats to Tilos, among others. There is a taverna here but not much more. The bus to and from the city of Rhodes rarely runs, so usually a taxi is used, and it costs around 70 Euro. There are rarely taxis in the port, so if you are going from Kamiros Skala to, for example, Rhodes Airport, you should book a taxi in advance. Above Kamiros Skala lies the ancient city of Kamiros.
