Acropolis of Lindos in Rhodes

The 116 meter high Acropolis rock above Lindos is Rhodes' most popular excursion destination. Not only the Acropolis, the same applies to the village of Lindos and the beaches of Agios Pavlos, Lindos beach and Pallas beach. If you go to Lindos, you get more wishes fulfilled than there is in a Kinder Surprise. It is truly noticeable when you are there, it feels as if every single tourist on Rhodes has come up with the same thought just when you are there yourself.

The Acropolis is open every day between 08.00-19.10 and admission is 12 euros. But before you visit the Acropolis, you should ask yourself if it is worth a visit. If you ask me, the answer is both yes and no. It's quite a long way up to the rock, it's hot, there's a lot of people and there's almost no shade. Last time I was here it took me 30 minutes to walk from the bus stop above Lindos to the entrance of the Acropolis. From the beginning of the village it took 20 minutes.

First you have to struggle through the alleys in the village itself, then you have to queue in the stairs with everyone who is going up and down. On the way up to the entrance, there are ladies selling all kinds of textiles. As it is, there is plenty of room when you enter the area itself. If you can, you should go here early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.

Join us on a tour to the Acropolis and then decide if it's worth a visit.

Can you ride a donkey up to the Acropolis in Lindos on Rhodes? The answer is yes.

Some go up on donkeys, but not like in the old days when there were many more donkeys here.

Is the Acropolis above Lindos in Rhodes worth a visit? Here you get answers.

After passing the entrance on the right, a steep staircase leads up to the area.

There is little shade and there is no water to buy inside the walls of the Acropolis in Rhodes.

Keep in mind that there is little shade and that there is no water to buy inside the walls.

The first thing that strikes you when you enter is that the place is so small. From a distance it looks much bigger. The second thing that strikes you is that you understand exactly why the Acropolis was built here. You have to look for a more impregnable place. Among the most interesting monuments are the Doric temple dedicated to Athena Lindia and the Hellenistic Stoa. Most of all, I like the boat that is carved into the steps at the beginning of the Acropolis, it is not entirely unlike a Viking boat.

There are no guided tours at the Acropolis, but there are many information boards.

So, is a visit to the Acropolis worthwhile? I think the historical part of the Acropolis is interesting, but maybe not worth the trip there. To be honest, and I will, I think the view of Lindos, Saint Pauls beach, Lindos beach and Pallas beach is much more awesome than any ancient ruins.
