Castle of Panteli in Leros |
Above Platanos, the Kastro, or the Castle of Panteli, overlooks virtually the entire island. The view is, to say the least, breathtaking. Kastro was probably built in the 11th century, and over the years it has been extended and reinforced several times, also by the Knights of Saint John who used the fortress to protect the island and its inhabitants from invasions.

The location could hardly be better. From here you have full control of everything that moves, both at sea and on land. The view is, as I said, stupendous. And perhaps it is the view that it is best with Kastro, because there is not much to see except for the Church of the Virgin Mary, and the nice museum. The church is restored and is famous for housing an icon that can perform miracles.

The castle is illuminated at night and visible from Panteli to Alinda. To reach the castle, you can choose the road, or the path. The castle lies about 200 metres above sea level, and the path is very steep. I usually choose to drive there. :-) Kastro is open daily from 08:30 to 13:00, and also Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 15:00 to 19:00.
