The ancient city of Kamiros in Rhodes |
Kamiros, this ill-fated ancient ruined city, is located about 30 km
southwest of Rhodes Town,
on the road along the port of Kamiros
Skala. The city was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 226
BC. But they patiently rebuilt the city, only to be hit by another earthquake
in 142 BC. Then they gave up and let the city return to nature.

In the 19th century, archaeologists began to take an interest in Kamiros and that interest has continued ever since and today Kamiros is one of Rhodes' biggest attractions. But you almost have to be an archaeologist to understand something, unless you are an archaeologist you really have to strain your imagination to appreciate the area. Basically all the houses and temples are in ruins and only a few columns remain of the once mighty temples.

The area is huge and there is no shade.
Personally, I don't think Kamiros is something to see, especially considering that there are so many other interesting sights on the island, such as Monte Smith and the Acropolis in Lindos. |
