Tzanata tomb in Kefalonia |
Tzanata tomb, outside the village of Tzanata about two kilometres west of Poros, is a Mycenaean tomb that is Kefalonia's most interesting historical attraction. The Greek archaeologist Lazaros Kolonas discovered the tomb in 1991 and excavations is still going on.

The grave is a so-called tholos tomb, which is a kind of circular tomb with conical or domed roof that were common in the Mycenaean culture (around 1550 to 1050 BC). The tomb is quite interesting even to a layman, if you are in the vicinity it is worth making a detour here. Open every day except Mondays. Admission free.

Inside the tomb. |
As said, I think that Tzanata tomb is well worth a visit, it is on the contrary with Avithos lake outside the village of Agios Nikolaos between Tzanata and Sami.
Avithos lake located outside the village of Agios Nikolaos between Tzanata and Sami.
Avithos lake is not much to see.
We drove there curiously since it is unusual with lakes on the Greek islands, and also because this one is said to be bottomless (!). But (of course) it is not, the lake is 10 meters deep and not much to see. |
