Poros in Kefalonia

Poros, Kefalonia's fourth largest village, is located on the coast about 14 kilometres north of Skala. The village is long and narrow and stretches a long way along the coast. In one part of the village is the port from where ferries runs to Killini on the Peloponnese. Here are also some hotels and tavernas. After the port (if you come from Skala) is the centre where there are more tavernas and hotels, as well as all other facilities that belongs to a village.

The village beach is nothing to boast of, it is very stony and it is difficult to get into the water. Further north lies the much better Ragia beach if you want to go for a swim.

Poros was one of the island's largest tourist resort before the tourist boom of the 1990s. Today, Skala has taken over the role of the East Coast's most important tourist destination. Instead, Poros can address itself as the East Coast's largest port, always something. Poros can also boast of the island's largest gorge, just outside the village.

The gorge is small compared with gorges in Crete, but here on Kefalonia it makes a great impression. The gorge is about 80 meters deep and almost vertical. The road leading out of the village passes through the gorge, if you come from Skala, otherwise it is on the contrary, of course.

A few kilometres west of Poros is one of the island's most interesting sights - Tzanata tomb which you can read about here.
