Monastery Zoodochos Pigi in Sikinos |
On a cliff, above Kastro, lies the nunnery of Zoodochos Pigi. The monastery was built in 1690, but has not been in use since 1836. But according to new information, a nun has been living in the monastery for a few years now. She runs a small monastery shop and guides around the monastery.
The monastery is located above the cosy village of Kastro.
The stairs up to Zoodochos Pigi take a toll but are worth every drop of sweat.
For many years, the monastery was the islanders' last refuge when the pirates harried at the most. Today, when it is more peaceful, the doors of the monastery are open to visitors every afternoon and evening.

This particular evening we were able to enjoy both sunset and full moon.
From the monastery you have this beautiful view down over the port of Alopronia.
The view over the sea, towards Folegandros, is so beautiful so you will never forget it. Not to mention the sunset, it is more beautiful than many of the more famous sunsets in the Cyclades. If you glance down towards the sea, the entire mountainside is covered with old terrace cultivations from old wine-growings.
