Chrisospilia Cave in Folegandros |
The cave, Chrisospilia, would be a great attraction if it were not so difficult to get to. The cave hides on the northeastern side, below the church of Panagia in Chora. The cave is only accessible by sea, excursion boats stops below, but unfortunately, you are not allowed to enter.
Down there is the entrance to Chrisospilia Cave.
The cave is divided into several chambers, the first one is 100 metres long and 50 metres wide and accommodate several Roman cisterns. The chamber number two (70 metres long) have numerous of beautiful stalactites. Ancient names are engraved in several places and it is believed that the cave has been known since 400 BC.
Somewhere below the highest cliff, to the left of Chora, is the cave.
It is known that the cave has been inhabited for longer and shorter periods, probably to protect themselves against pirates. To date, it has been found more than 400 engraved names, why so many are unknown, one theory is that young people got into the cave to show their bravery and as a proof that they have been there, they engraved their names. |
