Karlovassi on Samos

Karlovassi is Samos' largest town (6,700 inhabitants) and second largest port. It's a town that I'm not too fond of. The town, because it really is a town, is far too straggly, there is too much space and too many holes in between. It is difficult to get a grip on Karlovassi, plus there are quite a few ugly industries here. I don't normally bother with industries, but here I do.

The port promenade cannot compare to those in Pythagorion and Kokkari. A big road where the cars whiz by at high speed and waves crashing on an empty beach with big breakwaters. The only swimmable part of the beach is also not the one you would want to hang on the Christmas tree.

After all, there are things that are good about Karlovassi and you notice that when you enter the centre itself. There you are greeted by a genuine Greek town with all that that entails: narrow streets and small squares with shops, tavernas, kafenións and ouzerias.

ACCOMMODATION IN KARLOVASSI

There aren't that many hotels and I don't think very many people choose to stay here during the holidays. But if you're going with an early ferry, it might be good to stay overnight. Karlovassi is 20 kilometres from Samos town, and between 35-40 kilometres from Pythagorion (depending on which route you choose).

If you continue the road to the right of the port you will come to the famous waterfall, and to Potami beach, and it is the proximity to the waterfall and Potami that I think is the best thing about Karlovassi.
