First day on Naxos in low season |
We slept very well last night after the long journey from Crete to Naxos. I went to the baker and we had a very slow breakfast on the balcony. It felt really wonderful to wake up here. And exciting! I wonder what Naxos is like in low season
View of Kastro from our room at Pension Sofi.
You might be wondering why we chose to go to Naxos after Crete. We have already visited Naxos this year. Several times too. Why not go to new islands? Or to the Peloponnese? The answer is satiety. After our almost month-long stay on Crete, we felt full and fully satisfied with life and our long journey. We simply cannot take in more. Everything is perfect. Now we just needed to be in the present. Read. Sleep. Summarize. Hike. Rest. Socialize. Play backgammon. Philosophize. Possibly swim. Maybe the sense of adventure will return, then we will set off again. We chose Naxos because there is Greek everyday life there regardless of the time of year and because Pension Sofi is open all year round. The fact that we have a kitchen, double-glazed windows and a radiator in the room doesn't make it any worse.
A fairly deserted port esplanade in Naxos town on October 30th. |
When we went out for dinner in the evening, we discovered a (for us) new ouzeria in the alleys of the old town. Imagine that after so many visits to Naxos, you can still find new places. Excellent too!
Metaxi Mas in the old town in Naxos.
We ate a seafood platter with three types of grilled squid (calamari, octopus, soupia) and king prawns. We drank a bottle of water and half a kilo of wine with it. The bill ended up at €15 (including bread). The ouzeria is called Metaxi Mas and is highly recommended.
At Metaxi Mas you can choose white wine, red wine, ouzo and raki by the carafe.
