The village of Salakos in Rhodes |
The pleasant village of Salakos (about 350 inhabitants) is located at the foot of Mount Profitis Ilias, about 36 kilometres from Rhodes town. Salakos is my little oasis in Rhodes, and is something of a refuge when I want to be to myself.
The square in Salakos.
The small square is made for recovery. Here you get time for reflection and the feeling of being in Greece is marked. In the middle of the square, a small fountain ripples under a large tree.

When I sit in squares like this, I always wonder which came first: the square or the tree. The fountain's water drips slowly into the otherwise quiet surroundings. In the square, right by the fountain, Taverna Ta Kitada has placed its tables. Here you can sit for a long time and enjoy good food, friendly staff and a peaceful environment.
The good water Nymfi comes from Salakos.

Detail picture from the beautiful fountain.
Near Salakos there is a spring called Nymfi which supplies parts of Rhodes with water. The water is also available to buy in a bottle, very good by the way. There is a hotel in Salakos called Nymph and I could very well imagine staying there for a few nights. Book Hotel Nymph here »About 14 kilometres southwest of Salakos is the village of Embonas, which is the wine capital of Rhodes. Here, partly good wines are produced, partly different kinds of liqueurs and a good ouzo. Embona Winery is open to visitors daily between 09.30 and 15.30. Babis Taverna in the square is famous for its well-prepared home-made Greek food.
