Limonos Monastery in Lesvos |
Limonos monastery is located near the village of Filia, about 13 kilometres northwest of Skala Kalloni and about 20 kilometres south of Molyvos.
Limonos Monastery dates from 1526.
Part of Limonos Monastery.
The monastery, founded in 1526, is very interesting, partly because it is Lesvos' largest monastery, partly because it hosts a large library with more than 2,500 books and 450 manuscripts dating from the 9th century onwards, partly because of the many beautiful churches and chapels.

The area where the monastery is located is huge. |
Inside the actual monastery area there are a couple of three beautiful
churches, some of them may only be visited by men (due to an old tradition
as it says on the signs). The monastery is also a museum and there are
many interesting things to see. Outside the monastery there are about
40 small churches, some are so small that they just have room for
a priest.
Women are not allowed to visit the main church.

We always light candles and think of loved ones when we visit churches in Greece. |
These "stuff" in the museum gave us a headache.
Later we understood that they were there to separate the wheat from the chaff.
