The high mountains and the inaccessible treacherous coast were Amorgos'
great happiness when enemies and pirates ravaged at the worst in the
Cyclades. The islanders built their villages in the mountains to protect
themselves, the villages where difficult to detect from the sea and even
more difficult to attack. The oldest villages are now deserted:
Minoa above Katapola, Ancient
Arkesini below Vroutsi and Asfondilitis
in the mountains between Chora and Aegiali.
There are two coastal villages - Katapola and Aegiali
- and several mountain villages, all of them are fantastic. The villages
in the mountains belong to the nicest and most genuine in the Cyclades,
and all should be visited.
