Sigri in Lesvos

Sigri could be the place that gave birth to the expression the end of the road. The road ends here, both literally and figuratively. Now we are far from almost everything, at least it feels like that when you are driving down towards Sigri. To Mytilini it is about 90 kilometres and to Molyvos about 55 kilometres.

Sigri - the village at the end of the road.

The long narrow island in the background is called Nissiopi, there is a national park called Marine Park of Nissiopi and is the first marine fossil park in Greece. The national park can be visited by glass-bottom boat that departs from the harbor in Sigri. Read more on their website.

Sigri has an old history and has been inhabited for ages. Both Venetians and Turks have ruled over the village owning to the strategic and sheltered location. Most marks can be found from the Turks, including the big castle that stands on the peninsula outside the village. The castle was built in 1757 atop of the ruins of a Venetian castle.

The fortress in Sigri on Lesbos was built in 1757 on the ruins of a Venetian fort, a so-called Kastro.

The inside of Kastro is not much to see.

Today, it is only tourists occupying Sigri, but it is hardly noticeable, even though it is a tourist resort, the village has small-scale tourism. Those who choose to stay here do it for the peace and quiet, and perhaps for the feeling of being "in-the-middle-of-nowhere". There are several beaches in and outside the village. You find the most popular one if you go to the left in the village (the nose to the water). The beach is shallow and covered by the typical greyish sand found on many of Lesvos' beaches.

From the port of Sigri there are ferries to the port of Piraeus in Athens.

I have not stayed overnight in Sigri, but I would not mind doing it. Not only for peace and quiet, there are also other things that attract, including tavernas serving good food, for sure I would revel in fresh fish because Sigri is basically a fishing village. I can highly recommend Taverna Remezzo right next to the castle: delicious food, good ouzo, friendly staff and wonderful views. Restaurant Plaza is also well worth a visit.

ACCOMMODATION IN SIGRI

I hope to have the opportunity to stay overnight in Sigri. Friends of mine have stayed at Evangelia Studios and they were very pleased, so I will probably also stay there.
