Kaminia & Kato Katelios beach in Kefalonia

A few kilometres west of Skala lies Kato Katelios, a pretty undeveloped fishing village with a sand and gravel beach. In the small village there are several cosy beachside tavernas, some of them serves fresh fish. Sun beds and umbrellas are available for rent. Above the beach lies the village Katelios, that is why the beach is called Kato Katelios, Kato means lower in Greek.

Another few kilometres to the west lies Kaminia Beach. Neither this beach is particularly exploited, and not nearly as crowded as for example the beaches in Skala and Lourda. And it's a good thing, because the endangered sea turtle Caretta Caretta use the beach to lay eggs.

Kaminia beach lies just west of the village of Skala.

Caretta Caretta - which can be more than two meters long and weigh more than 450 kilo - is the second largest sea turtle. It is an endangered species, and one reason is that their nesting sites are usually located on the exploited beaches.
