Travel to Skiathos in Greece

Since Skiathos has an international airport and direct flights from many countries, it is very easy to travel here, both by charter flights and independently.

BY CHARTER FLIGHTS

Tour operators in many countries offers package holiday trips to Skiathos.

The runway at Skiathos Airport is very short, only 1,570 meters.

Landing on Skiathos is a bit of an adventure. The runway is short. Extremely short. 1,570 metres to be exact. The plane come in over the water near the harbour before landing with a thunderous rumble. In order to stop the plane before the runway ends, full braking is required.

I'm not particularly amused by flying and I'm often a bit shaky when the plane lands on Skiathos, but afterwards I just think it's awesome. When I fly home, I don't even think about the short runway, instead I enjoy the views of Skiathos.

BY INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS

Buy a spare seat sold individually through a tour operator. The airport is 4 kilometres from Skiathos Town. Taxis are waiting outside the arrival hall. The taxi ride to the port takes only five minutes. The cost is around 10 €. Another option is to go by air to Athens and travel on by domestic flight to Skiathos, or go by bus to Agios Konstantinos and travel on by boat to Skiathos.

BY DOMESTIC FLIGHTS

Skiathos has a daily flight connection with Athens during the summer.

PLANE SPOTTING

Skiathos is an extremely popular destination for plane spotters, i.e. people who are interested in seeing airplanes land and take off up close. Skiathos is heaven for plane spotters. Most stand at the airport and scout to get really close, sometimes dangerously close. We choose instead to sit at Mylos Taverna and watch, partly because we don't have to stand up, partly because we can have lunch during our plane spotting.

BY FERRY

Skiathos has very good boat connections with Skopelos and Alonissos. During the summer months, there are up to seven boats per day to/from Skopelos and Alonissos. Choose between fast catamarans and regular ferries. To Skopelos it takes between 50 minutes and 1.15 hours depending on which boat you take, to Alonissos between 1.10 hours and 2 hours. The fast boats cost about twice as much as regular ferries.
