Megali Ammos is the beach closest to Skiathos Town. It is also the most exploited beach on the island: long rows of hotels and tavernas along a beach that is quite mediocre by Skiathos' standards.

The beach is long and narrow and stretches almost to Mitikas beach. The sand is fine-grained and a bit brownish. Even though Megali Ammos is not one of the island's best beaches, it is always packed on the beach, the sunbeds stands close together. But that is not unique to Megali Ammos, it is the case on most beaches.

The reason why many people choose Megali Ammos over better beaches further south has its explanation: the beach is a large package-tour resort where many package travellers stay and it is convenient to walk down to the beach without having to change clothes. Another plus is the proximity to Skiathos Town.

Not far south of Megali Ammos is Mitikas beach, which is a fairly wide beach with fine brownish sand. Here there are not nearly as many people and plenty of shade from trees. Further away the beach changes its name to Vasilias beach.
