Finikounda in the southwestern Peloponnese |
Finikounda (or Foinikounta) is a small charming village located
on the south-west coast of the Peloponnese, in the region of Messenia.
It is one of the lesser known gems of this part of the Peloponnese, making
it a popular destination for those seeking a quieter and more authentic
Greek experience. Finikounda has approximately 580 inhabitants and is
a lively village all year round. Tourism is low-key and this is noticeable
when you are there.
Finikounda between Pylos and Koroni in the southwestern Peloponnese.
Finikounda is a very good base for exploring this part of the Peloponnese. Nearby are many other nice villages, such as Pylos, Methoni and Koroni. Another advantage is that the beach in Finikounda is better than the beaches in the above villages, and that there are many fairly unspoiled beaches in the area.

Finikounda is known, among other things, for its fish restaurants located along the cozy beach promenade. In the small harbour are many colourful fishing boats that deliver the day's catch to the taverns every day. So if you like fresh fish and seafood, you will love Finikounda.

The range of restaurants is good and many are located in a fantastic location.

Above the beach and beach promenade are a few streets with shops, cafes and restaurants. Although it is a small village, there are all the facilities you need for a successful holiday. And should you be missing something, as I said, it is close to Pylos (22 kilometres), Methoni (12 kilometres) and Koroni (20 kilometres) where the supply is greater.

If you like long fine unexploited sandy beaches, you will get your fill in Finikounda. The beach in the village is great, and there are several nice beaches just before Finikounda and just after, as you can see in the pictures of Mavrovouni beach and Loutsa beach below.
Mavrovouni beach is just before Finikounda.

Loutsa beach is where Finikounda ends.
TRAVEL TO FINIKOUNDAThe easiest is to fly to Kalamata, which is the only airport in the Peloponnese. There are direct flights to Kalamata with the Greek Aegean Airlines. From Kalamata it is approximately 50 kilometres to Finikounda. The easiest way is to rent a car at the airport and drive down to Finikounda. You can also go by bus.
ACCOMMODATION IN FINIKOUNDAI can warmly recommend you to stay a few nights in this very pleasant village. As I said, it is a very good base for exploring the south-western Peloponnese. Below are suggestions for good hotels in Finikounda.
