Agios Ioannis Theologos in Amorgos |
The monastery of Agios Theologos is not nearly as spectacular as the monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, but Agios Theologos still has its good points. The monastery is situated in a beautiful valley, a valley that in springtime shows a floral splendour that are seldom seen. The silence is so total that you almost do not dare to talk. It is believed that the monastery was built sometime between the 7th and 9th centuries, and is thus older than Panagia Hozoviotissa which was built in 1088.
On hike from Langada to Agios Theologos. The monastery is visible at the top.
What makes Agios Theologos well worth a visit is partly the lovely hike to reach it, partly the peaceful atmosphere that appear as soon as one enters the courtyard. Agios Theologos is no longer in use and usually one is alone there. Bring something to eat and drink and sit down on the stone wall and look out over the imaginative valley.
