Skala Kalloni in Lesvos |
Skala Kalloni can be compared to Lesvos' navel and is the perfect starting point for excursions to other parts of the island. The village is located in the middle of the island at Kalloni Bay, one of Lesvos' two huge bays, the other is called Gera on the south eastern part of the island, not far from Mytilini.

Skala Kalloni is the main place for sardine fishing on Lesvos, so this is a perfect place if you want to try to eat the island's "national dish", preferably on the fish taverna Mimis located in the main square of the village. Once you have eaten, you can walk down to the small fishing port from where your newly eaten sardines most probably have been landed the same morning.

If you want to go for a swim, you have two beaches to choose from, one on each side of the fishing port. The left beach is more exploited than the right one, otherwise they are similar. The sand - which can be really hot - changes from gray to light brown. The beach is shallow and child friendly. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent, and there are plenty of tavernas backing the beach. Just north of the village lies Skala Kalloni's great brother Kalloni.
