Agios Nikolaos in southwestern Peloponnese |
Agios Nikolaos is a small, charming fishing village about 10 kilometres
south of Kardamili. Before I first came here, I had seen pictures
online, and I was really looking forward to seeing the village in reality.
The pictures were deceiving, because Agios Nikolaos was much more beautiful
than I had imagined.

Agios Nikolaos is the largest fishing village in western Mani, and that despite only having about 380 people living here. A small village in terms of population, but a large village in terms of the number of fishing boats. The port and the seafront promenade completely dominate the village, this is where everything happens, and this is where most of the tavernas and restaurants are located. There are also several cafes and bars where you can sit and watch the sun set over the Gulf of Messina.

The village has preserved much of its traditional character with stone houses, narrow alleys and a quiet atmosphere. Agios Nikolaos is less touristy than Kardamili and much less touristy than Stoupa, which lies about 3 kilometres north of Agios Nikolaos. Although the village is small, it has all the facilities you could possibly need, such as shops and ATMs
Part of the pleasant seafront promenade.
Above the fishing port are several very good tavernas and restaurants.

Agios Nikolaos is one of the cosiest villages in western Mani. |
There is no beach in Agios Nikolaos itself, but don't despair, there is a beach just south of the village called Pantazi beach. Just north of the village there is a place called Gnospi where there is a swimming platform with bathing ladders and crystal clear water.
Pantazi beach in one direction.
Pantazi beach is within walking distance of Agios Nikolaos. It takes between 10-15 minutes to walk there. The beach is in two parts and is separated by a rocky ledge. The first part of the beach consists of pebbles while the second consists of sand. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent and there is a taverna called Taverna Pantazi. It is said that the beach is popular for people who want to swim in the evening and watch the sun set into the sea. The sunset is supposed to be especially beautiful from here. But I haven't seen the sunset from here, so I don't know if that is true.
Pantazi beach in the other direction.
The small village of Agios Dimitrios is located a few kilometres south of Pantazi beach. The village is tiny and consists of a few houses and a small port. Below the village there is a small pebble beach. As far as I know there is no taverna in the village, but it is close to Pantazi beach and Agios Nikolaos. There is a luxury hotel called Mani Suites in Agios Dimitrios. I do not know if there is a restaurant in the hotel.
The beautiful coastline between Pantazi beach and the village of Agios Dimitrios, which is visible on the right.
According to Greek mythology, this is where Helen of Troy was born. Between Agios Dimitrios and the village at the end of the road - Trachila - there is a lagoon called the Rock Pool. Unfortunately, I missed it, but I have seen pictures and it looks absolutely amazing. Google Agios Dimitrios, Rock Pool, Trachila, Mani.
The tiny village of Agios Dimitrios consists of a few houses, a small port and a beach.
ACCOMMODATION IN AGIOS NIKOLAOS AND THE SURROUNDINGSThe range of hotels is greater than you might think. There are even hotels in small Agios Dimitrios. Many of the hotels are of the slightly more luxurious type, but there are also small family-run pensions.
