Ormos Korthiou on Andros |
Ormos Korthiou is located in the southeast of Andros and has about 500 inhabitants. It is the fourth largest village of Andros after Chora, Batsi and Gavrio. Ormos means port in Greek, and Ormos Korthiou is the port of the village of Korthiou. The village of Korthiou is located in the mountains about three kilometers south of Ormos. Most people simply say Ormos instead of Ormos Korthiou.
View of Ormos Korthiou, or Ormos as most people say.
Ormos is a fairly untouristed village that is visited by few foreign travellers. This is probably because the beach is nothing to rave about. The beach is not attractive for swimming or sunbathing. It is often windy here and the waves can be high. But wind and kite surfers definitely like the beach. The beach is called Milos beach and is named after the windmill that lives on the beach. Windmill is called Milos, or Mylos, in Greek. If there had been a nice beach in the village, Ormos would probably have been as popular as Batsi. Nevertheless, I think Ormos is worth a visit. It is a typical Cycladic coastal village with a small fishing port and a long harbor promenade with tavernas and restaurants.
Milos beach in Ormos is not much to brag about.
The harbor promenade in Ormos.
Most of the action revolves around the harbor promenade and the long main street that runs through the village. Along the main street are bakeries, shops, cafes and tavernas, etc. When we were here for the first time, and saw the main street, we thought for a moment that we were in the village of Pyrgos on the neighbouring island of Tinos. The difference is that the main street in Pyrgos is much narrower, otherwise they are quite similar to each other. |

Here I am sitting eating a delicious gyros on the main street in Ormos.

I wrote above that I think Ormos is worth a visit, and this is partly because Greek everyday life is more tangible here than in, for example, Batsi, partly because it is close to many nice mountain villages, partly because it is fairly close to Andros Chora (20 kilometers) and last but not least because it is close to Andros coolest beach: Tis Grias to Pidima, which is located 2 kilometers north of Ormos. See link below.
Ormos Korthiou bay. Above the village lie many beautiful mountain villages. Aidonia is one of them.
